I want to ride my bicycle
Date 02 February 2010

By Klara van Wyngaarden, Johannesburg Decor Editor

I recently visited a few cycle shops to see if I could find a bicycle I’d fall in love with. Inevitably, I was pointed to the pink mountain bike in the corner, as I obviously didn’t look like the type who would enter races or go on mountain-biking excursions. I went home empty handed.

The fact is that I can only use, look at, buy, own or ride something that’s functional and aesthetically pleasing. There’s a good reason why most people’s bicycles end up hanging in the garage for years. Where are the well-designed urban bicycles in this country?

Yes, many are efficient, fast and technically amazing. But all I sought was a bike that I really want to ride, either in the park or when I need to pop out to buy some milk.

I did eventually find a suitable steed – it’s silver, and I’m happy to ride it now that I’ve removed all the stickers, though I’m still looking for the ultimate locally available bicycle. Are any SA designers keen to take up the challenge?

This year, I think we should stop thinking of cycling as something you have to do at 5 a.m. when it’s still pitch dark and make it a priority to find bikes we love and would be happy to be seen riding – anywhere and everywhere.

The bicycle and helmet below are great examples of what’s available in Europe:

A wooden bicycle by Berlin designer Arndt Menke-Zumbragel. This bike is fully functional, with a frame weight of 2.3kg, and is perfect for showing off.

I also love the Réflexe Bicycle helmet by OHC in France. It’s an elegant, light-weight leather helmet made from a shock-proof woven 3D textile interior that hardens instantly on impact. It can also be flattened and slipped into a bag. Pure genius!
