Cheryl Smit

We ask Cheryl Smit, winner of the Sanlam/Decorex Young Designer Style Shaper Cape, a few questions about her work and the people who inspire her.

Q: Where did you look for inspiration?
I looked at what was happening in the bathroom world by consulting with sanitaryware specialists, perusing magazine and interior books and doodling in my sketch book for layout ideas.

I've noticed that glass and mirror is being used extensively in today’s design projects and wanted to use as much as possible in the bathroom. Besides the glass shower enclosure, I used colour-sprayed glass for splash backs instead of wall tiles, sandblasted mirrors and mirror furniture.

Q: Designers who inspire?
One the home front, the designers who inspire me are the people who, with no training, few resources and very little money, create incredible homes using discarded and simple everyday items.

Globally, I'm inspired by Charles Rennie Macintosh. He was a design genius. And the men and women of the Modernist movement.

Q: Where is Cheryl Smit in 10 years?
I look forward to gaining experience and knowledge in this field and to be in a position to encourage and inspire young designers. I would also like to work with local crafts people to work towards creating true South African design.

Q: Advice you don’t mind sharing
Have items in your home that you love, as it shows your own personality. I think that pieces that have a special history for you or were found on travels make your home unique. It's important to love your space and to feel comfortable in it.

Q: A tool of the trade, you can never be without!
A sketch book and pencil.

Q: Your colour/fabric/design piece for 2009
I would like to see more locally made design products used in our homes.

Q: If you had to choose a different profession...
I'd love to be a photographer or maybe a chef or a fabric designer.
