What? No new chairs?
by VISI ONLINE JOURNALIST Remy Raitt
Finnish refinery Ore.e is challenging designers all over the world to NOT design chairs in 2012 – an initiative that coincides with Helsinki’s status as World Design Capital 2012.
This campaign is based on the principle that there are already enough chairs in the world, and that designers should focus their attention on repurposing or tweaking existing chairs rather than creating entirely new ones.
With a worldwide campaign on the go, Ore.e is asking designers to pledge that they won’t design a single chair next year.
I had to giggle when I saw the exhibition the Ore.e “protesters” put up at the recent Habitare Fair in Helsinki (14 – 18 September). However, I do think they have a point. Do you agree with their upcycling ideals? Or do you believe the only way design can move forward is with fresh innovation?

I have to pull out this link here too: http://www.vimeo.com/etsaaunohtaa/no-chair-design which is a tutorial educating people how not to design chairs! This is the greatest sustainable design challenge I have ever fazed. Keep up the good work!
