Toile gift wrap by Wendren Milford

Wendren Milford of Wren Design is best known for her eco-friendly tote bags made from coffee and PPC cement bags. The talented designer created a unique South African toile for VISI readers to download. 

What inspires you? 
It's simple: possibility. 

What does good design mean to you? 
Good design is important but it's not everything, because you need bad design to understand and seek better "good design". Bad design just doesn't "feel right", whereas a good design is the fuzzy, warm feeling inside that tells you it's perfect. 

Who are your favourite designers and why? 
To be honest, I don't have a favourite designer. I prefer to love works, because one designer can offer something that appeals and something else that doesn't appeal to me. 

If you could be anywhere right now, where would you be? 
In the bush. Nature is peaceful and quiet, yet noisy. 

Tell us more about your Lovely South Africa toile. What inspired the design? 
The design is inspired by all things that bring a smile to your face as you think of South Africa: 

Doilies and garden gnomes (I'm sure we all have a granny who has a house and garden decorated with these), "mossies" (this Afrikaans name for a Cape sparrow also reminds me of my grandpa scattering bread crumbs on the stoep), windmills, "bakkies" parked under flowering trees, funny-looking chickens, mismatched teacups, wrought-iron tables, "broekie" lace, and kids taking turns to not open the creaking farm gate. 

Sigh. All lovely memories of a wonderful place I have the privilege to call home…
