A blooming good business

I approached the shirt-making team of Bluecollarwhitecollar to get insight on how the shop manages to meet international and local fashion demands at appealing prices. In the process, I found myself unconsciously drawn into an affable conversation with the two brains behind the brand, Adrian Heneke and Paul van der Spuy…
Measuring up
Bluecollarwhitecollar recently launched its Pretoria store on the anniversary of its first store opening here in Cape Town.
“In the business world, the rear-view mirror is always clearer than the windshield,” adds Warren Buffett, the brand’s business guru. Paul, the man behind the designs, testifies to this by remarking that their Pretoria store is the very best of the three branches to date.
Where it’s at
The brand continues to bridge the gap between geography and lifestyle. It caters for both guys’ and gals’ fitted shirts, including a bespoke service, along with shorts and tees.
They’re permanently present at the Designgoods Market at the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock on Saturdays, they participate in the annual Design Indaba Expo, and they feature in an array of pop-up shops, including 36 Boutiques. This is in addition to their main branches in Cape Town’s Kloof Street, Parkhurst and now Pretoria.
“We survived the last three years through very difficult times and continue to grow,” Adrian says. The brand’s niche market has expanded too: “We’re now offering really big sizes under the Billy cut label for typically ‘rugby-sized’ South African men, and we’re also about to open a pop-up store in the new Neighbourgoods market in Juta Street, Braamfontein.”
Plans to expand
Networking comes naturally to the successful team who reflect that they’re proud of their great partnership, passion and clear-cut vision of where they’re headed. “We feel really strong about the brand and are ready to expand further.”
Bluecollarwhitecollar measures its success by the strong brand loyalty from its large following, which includes the likes of Cape Town designer and television celebrity Aidan Bennett and the Designgoods Market’s devoted crowd who, without fail, come to hang out to get their Saturday dose of Paul and Adrian’s good-natured theatrics.
