Man of steel
by VISI BLOGGER Nadine Arendse
Tac jewellery has widened its circle from retailing at LIM, Bona Fide, the Neighbourgoods Market and the 2011 Design Indaba to Fringe Arts in Kloof Street.
At the Designgoods Market (a platform for emerging designers at the Neighbourgoods Market) Daniel Fuller, the ever-cool industrial designer behind the brand, has his men’s stainless-steel jewellery evenly spread over an orderly workbench that resembles the average guy's dressing table. Here you’ll find rings reminiscent of bits of found machinery, playing-card silhouettes, paperclip details and a set of dog tags hanging off metal ball chains.
“I worked with a furniture designer and we explored jewellery using industrial techniques in a more intimate way,” says Daniel, when asked to reveal more about his business. “I don’t combine other metals, but I do use resins and coating, which are baked into the steel. This makes for an interesting contrast.” The resin coats are red, white and black, and clients can opt for either a brushed or a high-polish finish.
The amiable Daniel occasionally customises his range for grooms’ wedding bands, establishing finger size and design choice, and then engraving detail onto the rings. The Tac range extends to cufflinks and tie clips as well as interior pieces including, on occasion, candlestick holders – a pursuit Daniel intends to expand upon.
While the refined Coco Chanel found inspiration “in the sky in the street...”, Daniel looks to “everyday life, buildings and machinery” for creative references.
Catch Dan the Man at the Neighbourgoods Market in Albert Road, Woodstock, every Saturday.
