Ruth Prowse School of Art graduate, illustrator and graphic artist Kayla Shaban is behind local design studio Kayla Rain Co., one of this year’s Design Indaba Emerging Creatives.
With a digital gouache method, she creates simplistic and cheerful prints, stationery, cards and enamel lapel pins, six of which are due for release later this year. Using categories as a starting point, Kayla comes up with specific concepts for each of her designs, which are influenced by subjects like music or vintage finds. “With this new collection I definitely wanted to establish a distinct style throughout the designs, which I hope will become synonymous with the brand,” she says.
“Design Indaba really is a once in a lifetime experience,” says Kayla. “To be put in a situation with so much exposure as a new creative starting up a small business is just invaluable. I feel that taking part in the programme has already opened doors for me, and helped me connect with like-minded people.”
