Local Design: Kino

WORDS Mary Garner

Cape Town-based furniture design studio, Kino, has just won the Best of 100% Talent award at 100% Design South Africa.

Founded by Nico Hendriksz and Anton Louw, Kino focuses on manufacturing quality furniture that exudes a timeless quality, fine detailing and expert finishes.

Kino’s designs are currently divided into three separate collections. The bedroom-focused Slant range, which includes clothing rails, beds, bedside tables, benches, cupboards and mirrors, are made from European white beech and birch plywood with matt black finishes.

The Lucy range is made up of pieces ideal for children’s rooms or nurseries, including a cot, rocking chair and compactum, made from birch plywood with soft blue-grey and charcoal accents.

Klip is a collection of coffee, console, bedside, dinner and side tables, designed as stone slabs, nested in solid timber frames. They are available in natural ash and black ash.

“We do not sacrifice quality for quantity,” says Nico and Anton. “We have a small workforce and this ensures that every product gets the personal attention it needs during production. Our products are designed to be original pieces that serve an aesthetic and functional purpose.”

The Botanic Cupboard, a special piece revealed at 100% Design South Africa, was created in collaboration with wallpaper designer Robin Sprong.
