Piet Hein Eek X NLXL: Rijksmuseum Wallpaper Collection

WORDS Palesa Kgasane

An exciting venture between designer Piet Hein Eek and wallpaper studio NLXL sees the release of nine art-inspired designs being made into a range of wallpaper.

Wallpapers are not a thing of the past, certainly not when there is design innovation to this degree. Art lovers can look forward to shopping a novelty item that also serves as a chic addition to the home with these historical wallpaper designs. Showcased at the Rikjsmuseum in Amsterdam, the designs, which are printed on soft cloth, are inspired by different aspects of renowned artworks in the museum’s collection.

“By taking what’s there as a source of inspiration, I try to connect past and future in a pragmatic and natural way,” says Piet. “Surprisingly enough this urge to do what’s obvious often provides innovative products and concepts.”

The mural-size wallpaper collection was introduced at Salon del Mobile, 100% Design in London, Design Week in Tokyo, and of course in Milan.

The full collection can be viewed and purchased via the NLXL website.
