After spying Frances White’s cheerful, colourful cushion designs at the Design Indaba expo this year, we decided to find out more about this Johannesburg-based surface designer with roots in fine art and graphic design.

Established in July 2011, My Favourite Colour is a surface design company oriented towards interiors. The venture was started after Frances became disillusioned with an office job in graphic design, and, luckily for us, decided to follow her passion for making beautiful things. At present the main focus is cushions, although tablecloths and table runners are also being produced, with even more in the pipeline.

A lover of pattern and colour, Frances is massively inspired by nature, a theme that pervades her work. Particularly heartened after a spring-time honeymoon visit to Tsitsikamma National Park, the artist decided to design each pattern around a specific floral region (such as Highveld, West Coast and Bushveld) with the aid of old South African botanical books for reference – retaining a penchant for the Scandinavian design aesthetic that also influences her work.

The designs are created using a finely tuned combination of drawing, painting and digital manipulation, printed with water-based pigments on cotton. Among the ranges, which vary from bold, floral prints to patterns composed of Johannesburg garden birds, are designs incorporating children’s colouring-in books. We particularly fell for these, created after Frances made nostalgic colouring-in books and gave them to friends’ children to fill in.

The delightful products coming from My Favourite Colour are available online, and range from R350-R495.

Based on the attention the company is getting, scatter cushions have never been quite so enticing.
