“To create rooms and spaces that nobody wants to leave.” That’s the design philosophy of architect Cathy Skillicorn, who earlier this year completed the beautiful new-look Mooi Hair Salon in Cape Town.
Cathy’s original brief for the house in Oranjezicht that hadn’t changed in 40 years was to design a new living room and an adjoining outdoor entertainment area, with a seamless flow between the two spaces. “Halfway through construction, the brief for the new addition suddenly changed from living room to salon,” says Cathy. “The transition was surprisingly easy.” Mooi used to be located on Kloof Nek Road, but had to find a new home when the landlord decided to sell the building.
It was important to complement the classic features of the house with those of a modern salon. The aim was “to be unashamedly contemporary with the new addition, while not detracting from the existing”, says Cathy. She also wanted to capitalise on the views and ensure that the space would have natural light irrespective of the time of year.
Luckily, Cathy had a client “who appreciates good design and who has great taste”, which made this project an enjoyable one to work on.
